Speaking at a televised program, Shawki Allam said scientific theories are subject to change whereas the verses of the Quran are ageless.
Allam, who also heads the secretariat of the Word Fatwa Board, was speaking on the relation between religion and science.
He noted that scientific theories are always under investigation and never definitively proven.
He also said that Islam and knowledge have a strong bond and that understanding Islamic texts requires the use of different fields of knowledge.
Many Muslim scholars went beyond religious sciences in their scientific endeavors and did research in such fields as medicine, physics, chemistry, mathematics, etc, Allam stated.

He said that Islam attaches importance to acquiring knowledge and has recommended the study of empirical sciences.
There are many hadiths of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that encourage the acquisition of knowledge and the study of science, he added.
